The Senior Room pupils have been engaging in group projects for the past number of weeks. On Friday 10th May, they presented these projects to the class.
The project topics were; Weather Instruments by Billy, Max, Sarah and Lucy. Clouds by Isobel, Sam, Lily and Nicole. The Water Cycle by Fred, Max, Ruby and Leah. Ireland's Climate by Katelyn, Anna-May, Alexis and Gerard. Meteorology by Ronan, Johnny, Darren and Hannah. The winning groups were Clouds, and Weather Instruments. All the pupils worked hard on their projects and presented them very well. On Thursday 16th May, the school attended the Pedigree Day in Clonmel organised by the County Museum. All the children had the opportunity to engage with many different farm animals and the Agri-Aware Mobile Farm.
They also learned about penny-farthings, watched a farmer shear his sheep and a blacksmith make horse shoes. The children were able to learn about techniques from the past then put them into action as they tried out a spinning wheel and used straw to construct a variety of items. Many thanks to the Museum for a great day out! During the week of 13th - 17th May all the children participated in Active Schools Week. For this, we took on the 'mile a day' challenge with every pupil successfully completing a mile every day, and achieving five miles by the end of the week!
On Monday, the children took part in some athletics lessons. On Tuesday, we attended the Clonmel swimming pool for our aquatics lessons. On Wednesday, the Senior Room participated in an orienteering and anagram challenge while the Junior Room enjoyed playing parachute games. And finally, on Thursday and Friday all the pupils had great fun designing, developing and completing their own obstacle courses. Another hugely successful and fun Active Schools Week! We are excited to announce our Race Night fundraiser being held at the Clonmel Greyhound Stadium on Friday 31st May.
This night is being facilitated by the Killurney Parents Association to raise crucial funding for the school that will go towards the continued education and development of its pupils. Tickets are available to purchase directly from Killurney school or at the Stadium gate on the night. There will also be a prize draw and multiple spot prizes to be won! Over the course of a month, the children will observe, care for and learn about how an egg develops into a chick. We must ensure that the incubator is at the optimal temperature and has an adequate amount of moisture to allow the growth and development of the eggs.
The children are really enjoying this project and of course are being very careful not to be 'too noisy' to frighten the baby chicks!!!! This project integrates with the block that we have recently completed on RSE (Relationship and Sexuality Education). Following on from our very successful Autism Awareness Day we were enabled to purchase a variety of materials for our new Sensory Room or Seomra Céadfach.
Our Seomra Céadfach is now up and running, and the children are free to enjoy this new asset to our school. Over the Easter holidays we had our new vegetable beds installed. We have had vegetable beds for the past few years but they had become a little worse for wear!
The children love to grow and harvest their own vegetables and now having installed our new 'block work' veggie beds we will ensure that children will enjoy tending them for years to come. We have also planted some wild flower seeds to promote biodiversity around the school. A special thank you to all those involved - Eddie Walsh, Philip Cox, Pa Burke and of course, our ever dedicated care-takers, Mr and Mrs Grant. Killurney school is so lucky to have the dedication of the best care-takers in the country! |
