September 2023

``After a very enjoyable summer break, Killurney N.S. reopened their doors and said hello to two new junior infants in September. All the children in the junior room were very welcoming towards them and helped them get settled in their new classroom. The juniors also appear to be really enjoying the sand pits which are a new edition to the school’s outdoor classroom. There were also changes in the senior as we welcomed the new third class into the senior room as last year`s sixth class are missed by many.
Sports for the pupils in both classrooms commenced straight away. Firstly we started GAA coaching for both the junior room and the senior room which everyone seems to really enjoy. In the spirit of the Rugby World Cup, we also got straight back into tag rugby coaching, organized through Munster Rugby. This includes drills and some fun games. Continuing with our school sports packed month, the senior room participated in the primary school’s cross country running in Thurles. This was a very enjoyable day with Judy O’ Donnell winning gold in the third and fourth class race, Robyn O’ Reilly also taking home gold in the fifth and sixth class race and the fourth class girls winning bronze in the teams category.
On Friday the 29th of September we celebrated “Yellow Day” in memory of the late Mrs. Phil Burke who sadly passed away this summer after a short illness. We organized a school fundraiser and all pupils and teachers dressed in yellow and participated in an hour of reading for fun on Friday afternoon. We managed to raise €453 which will be donated to the CARE Cancer Support Centre in Clonmel in Mrs. Burke's name.  We have fond memories of Mrs. burke coming to the school with her dog Peg each week to read with us.  It was a very popular part of the school week and it made reading very relaxed and easy.
Over the past month the junior room have been covering the Theme of “Myself”.  They learnt about their senses,  made personal timelines which included a photo of themselves as a baby, a toddler and how they are now. They carried out interviews with each other as Ghaeilge and also made Andy Warhol art pieces.  Andy Warhol is famous for his popular culture type art design.
The senior room created marble runs out of fully recyclable materials and all the senior room teams really put a huge effort into this STEM competition. The pupils had two weeks to create these marble runs, and the aim of this competition was to see which teams’ marble could make it down the whole run. There were some funny fails and there were also some total successes. The senior room also made Bahidora art pieces. These pieces are fully made from paper and inspired by nature.
From the start of September, every break and lunch time, the  senior room pupils have taken part in rounders for fun. Everyone looks forward to playing during break times, although some days it gets competitive and the teachers must act as referees! At this stage we have lost almost all the balls on the school premises during our rounders games. The most important thing however, is that everyone has fun participating and is included.
It has been a very action packed and fun filled month and we all look forward to next month’s activities.
