Green-Schools Flag
Green-Schools is Ireland's leading environmental management and award programme in Primary and Secondary schools across the country. Killurney National School currently holds two Green-Schools flags. The first we received for managing and monitoring litter and waste, and the second we received for monitoring and reducing the school's energy usage. We are currently working on our 3rd Green-Schools flag for conserving water, and we have recently installed a water-butt at the school.
We are also very proud of our gardens, wildflower meadows and veggie beds, and have won multiple first prizes in the County Council Tidy Schools competition down through the years. We also came first in their inaugural Environmental Project competition in 2006, and maintained this success for the following 3 years.
Athletics
Killurney has a great reputation in the area of athletics, boasting wins of both the John Quirke and the Tony Ryan Perpetual Shields at the Marlfield Cross Country Championships. Every year we take part in both the Thurles and Clonmel Cross Country Days, always achieving outstanding success. We even appeared on County Tipperary Matters in 2014!
Art
The school takes part in a wide variety of art workshops and competitions each year, and it is a subject area that the children really enjoy. Our most recent competition winner was Mark Ryan who received a trophy for his picture in the Credit Union Art Competition. We often visit the South Tipperary Art Gallery to view exhibitions, and participate in drawing and craft lessons. We love to invite local artists such as Doirin Saurus to come to the school and share their knowledge and expertise with the children. We have a wonderful tapestry depicting Sliabh na mBan on proud display in our school hall which was designed and produced as a 4th and 5th class Field Tapestry Project.
Maths & Science
We are the holders of 5 awards for Maths and Science excellence, and these are areas in which we continue to strive for achievement.
