Health Promoting Schools Initiative
Killurney School is working hard on our Health Promoting Schools Initiative. We have decided to focus on two particular areas - healthy eating and physical activity. Throughout the year we will be examining these topics in further detail. We have already studied the 'Eat Well Plate' and various food groups, and children in the Senior Room completed a healthy weekly menu. We have always implemented a healthy eating policy in our school. (See guidelines below.)
Physical activity has always played an important role in our school life and the children take part in a variety of outdoor and adventure activities each year such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics, dance, games and orienteering. We have also recently taken part in the Operation Transformation Initiative '10 @ 10'. See our video below!
Throughout the Health Promoting Schools Initiative we will also target areas such as mental health and well-being. In fact, we have a 'Be Well' month scheduled later in the year.

Our Healthy Eating Policy Guidelines
In school, children are encouraged to make healthy choices and to take responsibility for their health as part of our Social, Personal & Health Education curriculum. The importance of healthy eating is highlighted and nutrients identified that are necessary for a balanced diet. We explore how diet promotes growth, performance and development. This is to better enable the child to understand and appreciate what it means to be healthy and to have a balanced lifestyle. We encourage children to bring in a healthy drink and some of the recommended foods for lunch.
Our policy suggests the following foods:
All kinds of raw vegetables or fruit.
Sandwiches and other carbs such as rolls, rice cakes, wraps and crackers.
Cheese, yoghurts, popcorn, raisins.
Milk and water are the most tooth-friendly drinks. Pure fruit juices and smoothies are also healthy options. Children are encouraged to drink water and may bring their bottled water into their classroom if they so desire.
Do not send in:
Chocolate products including chocolate covered cereal bars, chocolate rice cakes, chocolate yoghurts, crisps, fizzy drinks, sweets, toffee bars, lollipops, chocolate mini rolls and Oreo biscuits. A child who is given these to bring to school will be asked to keep it for eating after school hours.
We ask for parent’s co-operation in sending healthy lunches to school and to remember that it is easier for a child to eat healthily if his or her friends are doing likewise.
