October and November 2023

Over the past two months we have done a wide range of activities like our cross country race in Clonmel. Despite it being very cold and rainy we did very well with multiple people winning medals and some even coming in first place.
Secondly, we had our football blitz for First, Second and Third class which they really enjoyed. They won two matches and lost one.
Later in the month we finished our tag rugby lessons with Joe which we started doing at the start of the year.
The fifth and the sixth class worked very hard on a debate hosted by the charity concern. We had to convince one of the people working for the charity that all children in Ireland do not have access to a playground locally and although we put a lot of effort into it we lost against the other school.
A lot of people also  brought in shoe boxes for the Team Hope shoe box appeal where you fill a shoebox with toys clothes sweets and hygiene products and Team Hope send it out to children all over the world who need it.
The senior room have been doing a lot of work with S.T.E.M like making wind mills and marble runs out of recyclable materials, our most recent project being building water proof houses.
For science week the junior room did lots of experiments, one being trying to make a DIY thermo for Mrs Carroll`s hot chocolate and another being making musical instruments that you can either strike, pluck, shake or blow into. They also carried out a “Dancing Raisin” experiment and a “Soap and Pepper” experiment to demonstrate the importance of washing your hands properly.
The junior room made menus and did role play of “Sa Bhialann” in Aistear as they explored the theme of “Bia” in  Irish lesson while the senior room are going over verbs and Irish nouns.
The senior room are also doing projects on Japan. The topics are: Culture, animals, food, houses and sports.
On the day of the Hallowe`en break we all played games that the sixth class set up: One where you use a ruler to cut bits off of a pile of flour with a jelly on top and if the jelly falls then you have to stick your head into the flour. We had  two piñatas and also played Snap Apple. If you could manage to catch the apple in your mouth, you got sweets. Everyone also dressed up for Hallowe`en in tonnes of fun costumes for the day.
In late November, our tag rugby couch returned for a visit with the URC rugby trophy which Munster won last season. We had great fun taking photos with the huge cup. Joe also gifted us a big bag of rugby balls that we will be able to use for P.E.
All in all, it has been a very eventful two months and we have had lots of fun.

September 2023

``After a very enjoyable summer break, Killurney N.S. reopened their doors and said hello to two new junior infants in September. All the children in the junior room were very welcoming towards them and helped them get settled in their new classroom. The juniors also appear to be really enjoying the sand pits which are a new edition to the school’s outdoor classroom. There were also changes in the senior as we welcomed the new third class into the senior room as last year`s sixth class are missed by many.
Sports for the pupils in both classrooms commenced straight away. Firstly we started GAA coaching for both the junior room and the senior room which everyone seems to really enjoy. In the spirit of the Rugby World Cup, we also got straight back into tag rugby coaching, organized through Munster Rugby. This includes drills and some fun games. Continuing with our school sports packed month, the senior room participated in the primary school’s cross country running in Thurles. This was a very enjoyable day with Judy O’ Donnell winning gold in the third and fourth class race, Robyn O’ Reilly also taking home gold in the fifth and sixth class race and the fourth class girls winning bronze in the teams category.
On Friday the 29th of September we celebrated “Yellow Day” in memory of the late Mrs. Phil Burke who sadly passed away this summer after a short illness. We organized a school fundraiser and all pupils and teachers dressed in yellow and participated in an hour of reading for fun on Friday afternoon. We managed to raise €453 which will be donated to the CARE Cancer Support Centre in Clonmel in Mrs. Burke's name.  We have fond memories of Mrs. burke coming to the school with her dog Peg each week to read with us.  It was a very popular part of the school week and it made reading very relaxed and easy.
Over the past month the junior room have been covering the Theme of “Myself”.  They learnt about their senses,  made personal timelines which included a photo of themselves as a baby, a toddler and how they are now. They carried out interviews with each other as Ghaeilge and also made Andy Warhol art pieces.  Andy Warhol is famous for his popular culture type art design.
The senior room created marble runs out of fully recyclable materials and all the senior room teams really put a huge effort into this STEM competition. The pupils had two weeks to create these marble runs, and the aim of this competition was to see which teams’ marble could make it down the whole run. There were some funny fails and there were also some total successes. The senior room also made Bahidora art pieces. These pieces are fully made from paper and inspired by nature.
From the start of September, every break and lunch time, the  senior room pupils have taken part in rounders for fun. Everyone looks forward to playing during break times, although some days it gets competitive and the teachers must act as referees! At this stage we have lost almost all the balls on the school premises during our rounders games. The most important thing however, is that everyone has fun participating and is included.
It has been a very action packed and fun filled month and we all look forward to next month’s activities.

After many preparations and tremendous effort from both children, teachers and parents our graduation for our 2nd class to the senior room and of course our sixth class to their secondary school took place on the nineteenth of June 2023.

The ceremony commenced with a few words from Mrs Carroll , followed by the song “ True Colours” performed by the senior class room with sixth class singing the opening as a class.
Next, Fr. Power granted the sixth-class pupils a blessing for their endeavour to secondary school. After that 6th class read their speeches that brought a tear to many eyes as the children included their favourite memories and thanks to the teachers. Ms Hogan said a small poem for the sixth class and then the 3rd class to 6th class sang “You can count on me” by Bruno Mars.2nd class were presented with a gift each and 6th class a card and gift each. Ms Hogan was gifted a Mulligans voucher from all the sixth-class girls. The hall was beautifully decorated and the food afterwards was much appreciated and enjoyed by all present. Although full of emotion, the day was delightful and flew past quickly. Many thanks to all that were involved and contributed. It will be yet another delightful memory for the 6th class going forward in their education.

This June, we celebrated Creative School week and Friendship week.
Pupils across all classes took part in a wide range of team building and collaborative activities. The junior room explored " what it means to be a good friend" and infants created "Friendship Recipes". The Senior room continued with their Friends for Life programme in SPHE.
All pupils in the school worked together to create a mural on our school shed with the help of Mrs Meagher. This was designed by the pupils as part of our Creative Schools initiative. The senior room also painted our raised beds and have been busy painting tractor tyres which we will be turning into giant sandpits for the children to play with in September.
The junior room also created beautiful still life drawings of summer flowers using oil pastels. We will be entering these into the Clonmel Summer Flower Show art competition which will take place in early July. They also created a collaborative piece of art based on the theme of Friendship.
The senior room were also kept busy putting the final touches to their piece of art work for the 1848 Monster Meeting project  with local artist Mia Kearney.  This will be put on display in Kilcash hall along with the work of other local schools to mark the 175th anniversary of the 1848 monster meeting on Slievenamon by the Young Irelanders.

On the 13th of June 2023 we had our annual sports day.
When we first came in, we got put into our teams. The team names were Juicy Couture, Sloppy Salmon, Soggy Chips and Dead Bumble Bees 27.
We all competed in the 100m sprint and next we competed in our long distance races. The junior and senior infants ran 200m. The first, second and third class ran 400m and the fourth, fifth and sixth class ran 500m.
As you know we have been doing swimming in the Clonmel pool for the past 8 weeks so we then had to take a quick break to go swimming.
When we got back from swimming, we took part in lots of activities such as high jump, long jump, the egg and spoon race and the three legged race. We all really enjoyed taking part in all of these amazing activities.
As a treat after all of our hard work, the teachers treated us with an ice-cream each from the ice-cream van.
We also had some of our past students come back to visit us for sports day. It`s always lovely to have them back and hear all about what they have been getting up to.
It was another fun and eventful sports day. Everyone went home tired but happy after a long day.

School Tour to the Watershed 2023

On the 15th of June 2023 we went to the Water Shed in Kilkenny for our school tour. We departed Killurney N.S at 8.30 AM and arrived there at 9.10 AM.
We took part in lots of fun filled activities such as dodge ball. We then got separated into two different teams, and did best out of three to see who would win.
We also played a knock out game where there were 6 people on a bouncy castle, you then had to jump over a beam that rotated inside.
We played X and O’s outside with hula hoops and bean bags. To play the game you needed 6 people on a team. You then needed to run towards the hula hoops and drop your bean bag in. whoever got three in a row was the winner.
After that we went into the changing rooms to get into our spare clothes for the water slide. It was a huge waterslide that had a pool at the bottom. We all had great fun during this activity.
Later on, we went to another bouncy castle. There was a wrecking ball swinging over and back in it. You then had to swing the wrecking ball at other people to try knock them down.
We then did an activity where you attach yourself to a flexible rope. The aim of the game was to collect the most balls, which were stored in a container in the middle of the bouncy castle. We all got multiple attempts and really enjoyed this game.
Next, we played a game where everyone was assigned a colour. You then had to run in with a timer on, and whoever got the most scores won.
Finally, we went swimming. The pool had a really cool feature which allowed you to choose the depth of the pool. This worked as the floor was able to descend. We all just had a play in the pool for half an hour and then we were so disappointed that we had to leave.
As we were about to leave, we all decided to take a group photo, we all jumped in front of the Water Shed logo to show the amazing day that we had. Of course we had to shout “Up Tipp” as we were in Kilkenny!

This May has been granted glorious weather, something we have taken advantage of wholeheartedly and facilitated many activities in. Here are some of the fun filled events we participated in as another month flew past.

This month of May has been a hectic month for sports….
Swimming lessons in Clonmel swimming pool commenced on the 2nd of may the first of a series of 8 lessons which will conclude the final week of school. The children thoroughly enjoyed swimming and the feel of an approaching summer that accompanied it.
On the 5th of May we played a tag rugby blitz against six other local schools. Killurney played in three triumphant games and represented the school wonderfully.
Newtown NS visited us on the 10th of may to play a series of matches. Both schools embraced their opponents with a friendly competition whilst having tremendous fun. Biscuits and refreshments were served afterwards as the children mingled.

The 19th of may our bus departed from school and brought us to the Pedigree day in Clonmel. The children enjoyed a busy few hours of watching :llamas ,bees ,donkeys ,a horse, calves horse shoes being made and sheep being sheered . This was both an entertaining and educational day for the children.

The 13th of may was a delightful day as first and second class celebrated their communion. It was a peaceful church ceremony said by Fr. Ryan followed by their individual celebrations .Everyone had a terrific day wearing their dresses and suits with pride .The day was gifted fantastic weather resulting in beautiful photographs .

Mia Kearney has paid numerous visits to us over the previous few weeks working with us on a local heritage project. We are immensely grateful for her generosity and efforts on helping make our gigantic witch project. This is for the memorial of the congregation on Sliabh na mBan in 1848 . There will be a display in kilcash hall in July .

Standardized testing commenced on the 22nd of May and was completed on the 1st of June. The children are relieved to be finished and are now looking forward to unwinding slightly in the coming weeks

As the 6th class graduation hoodies have arrived the approaching summer has become realistic and we look forward to updating you in the coming weeks on yet another packed month.

April 2023

After a very enjoyable Easter break the children got back to work and looked forward to a busy last term with lots of nice activities planned.
The senior room have started their Friends for Life training and have been enjoying learning about being resilient and recognising emotions.
During this term we will be completing a project to celebrate the Monster Meeting of 1848 on Sliabh na mBan. We have been preparing to complete a multi-media art project with local artist Mia Kearney and this month we have been compiling local knowledge.
During April as part of our classroom incentives the senior room have been enjoying doing cooking lessons in small groups on a Friday. So far they have cooked pizza and chips and learned about kitchen safety and kitchen hygiene. We have really enjoyed what we have cooked so far.
Meanwhile, the junior room have been busy learning all about the weather in SESE and Aistear.  We read the story “The Perfect Rain” by Tatyana Feeney and learned all about the different weather symbols used by Met Éireann and what they mean. We also watched some examples of weather reports and the children then designed their own weather maps in groups and delivered some rather extreme weather reports to the rest of the class. They also learned about waterproof materials in science and participated in a STEM challenge, to design and build a tent for Teddy on his Irish camping holiday.

March 2023

March was a super busy month here in Killurney. We got a lot of work done on the run up to the Easter holidays. We learned about the traditions associated with Easter and also completed some fun art projects for the Clonmel Show. The Junior room constructed multi-media cherry blossom trees in fabric and Fibre while the senior room made some beautiful illustrations of spring flowers on clear Perspex. Well done to all pupils who entered, especially to those who won prizes for their works of art!
At the start of the month we celebrated World Book Day and enjoyed hearing about some of the new book releases and interesting authors the children have come across. All students completed a book project and presented their work in front of the entire school. The children also got very creative and wore some fun costumes related to their projects and favourite book characters. We had all sorts of characters joining us in school on this day including Hagrid, Wednesday Adams, Peter Rabbit  and even a couple of Farmers from the Farmers Journal. We had prizes for best overall project and best costume in each classroom, with the winners receiving an Easons gift card.
At the start of March, we also started back at GAA coaching with our new coach Robert Dowley. We have really enjoyed the new drills and skills we are learning which we are putting into practice during our matches. We have started with Gaelic football but hope to also do some hurling and camogie training in May. We also look forward to playing some organised matches against other local schools next month.
During the month of March, we celebrated Coicíse na Gaeilge and took part in some fun activities to mark this. We enjoyed Irish dancing lessons with Carmel Lawrence  and learnt the Walls of Limerick and the Siege of Ennis. On the Friday of Seachtain na Gaeilge we also had a “Lá Glas” on which we wore green to school and made an extra big effort to speak as Gaeilge to recognise and celebrate our Irish culture and heritage.
In SESE and Aistear this month, the junior room learned all about different types of homes around the world. The junior and senior infants carried out a STEM challenge to design a house for the Three little Pigs. They used straws, lollipop sticks and blocks in their designs and made predictions as to which house could withstand the wrath of the “Big Bad Wolf” ie. Mrs Carroll`s hairdryer.  We also read “The True Story of The Three Little Pigs” in class and the 1st and 2nd class enjoyed taking on the role of the Wolf`s attorney incorporating  both drama and literacy, in attempting to prove his innocence.
On the day of the Easter Holidays the children from both classrooms took part in an Easter Escape Room and STEM creation morning organised by the senior room. The third and fourth class designed an egg holder to support and prevent an egg cracking when dropped from a height. We had some very creative designs and enjoyed experimenting with this. Ms Hogan and the senior students helped facilitate the escape room for the junior students before completing their own difficult challenge. Following clues around the classroom the children had to break the codes in order and be the first group to escape. We had great fun working together and completing these challenges. Thankfully we all managed to escape just before we went home to enjoy the holidays.

Ukraine Mission

10/3/2023

On the 10th of January 40 men including Ellie O Donnell’s father Patrick O Donnell, Robyn O Reilly’s father Stanley O’ Reilly, Lucy Burke’s father, Patrick Burke and Lucy Meagher’s uncle Ed O’Donnell delivered vital supplies to the Ukraine including 18 jeeps, an ambulance, thermal clothing, medical supplies and 32 generators. Here is the outlook and reflections from Paddy, Stanley, Patrick’s and Ed’s experience on their road trip to the Ukrainian border. These are some questions we asked them.

1. What was the worst part of the trip?
The worst part of the trip for us was the ferry from Ireland to France because the sea was so rough and the border crossing at the Slovakian Ukrainian border was a very long wait.

2. What was the best part of the trip?
The best part of the trip was seeing how happy the Ukrainians were with all of the jeeps and supplies we gave them.

3. What countries did you drive through to get there?
We drove through Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and entered the border regions of the Ukraine.

 4. What interesting things did you see on the way? Some interesting things we saw on the way included the Austrian Alps, Paris at night, the city of Budapest and how beautiful Vienna is in person.

5. What was the Ukraine like?
The Ukraine looked like a very difficult place to live even the areas that are not affected by the war because people are very poor and live off very little.

In conclusion, the mission to the Ukraine brought together a group of people who wanted to help and give back and support people on the ground in the areas worst affected. It made each of the men who travelled realise how lucky and fortunate they are to live in Ireland. Since returning to Ireland messages and photographs of thanks and appreciation have been flooding in from communities benefitting from all the donations delivered during the mission to the Ukraine. A year to this date, when Russia invaded the Ukraine, and the lives of these people vastly changed forever; we as an Irish community will forever remember the arduous journey and the sense of help and support we were fortunate enough to be able to provide during this time.
