ACTIVE SCHOOLS FLAG 2024-2026

We are currently working towards our Active School Flag. Our primary aim is to encourage our pupils to be more active, with particular emphasis on participation, inclusion and fun! Over the course of the year, we will be partaking in a number of fun active challenges and initiatives. Our Active School slogan is "Walk or run, just have some fun!" Keep an eye on this page for our latest Active Flag news!

We are very lucky to have inter-county football player Ms Howard leading the session but all staff members like to join in!

Active schools student committee

Many thanks to our active schools committee for all of their help with organising and facilitating our Active flag activities. We decided to nominate 2 pupils from 3rd, 4th and 5th class to represent as well as all the 6th class pupils. Specific examples of our active school committee responsibilities include;
  1. Keeping tallies of our Skip around Europe and Skip around the World Challenges and recording the results on our Active Flag notice board
  2. Team captains  for our Sports Day and Crazy Golf Takeover
  3. Organising our annual splash day- filling up water balloons, planning and running water obstacle course, organising clean up for afterwarsd
  4. Organising Sports equipment for break times as well as once a term clean up of PE storage room.
  5. Tallying results for our "What Clubs are we in"? survey and creating the corresponding bar chart
  6. Organising playground games for younger pupils as playground leaders.

Cross Country
Ms Hogan's class took part in cross country competitions in Carrick on Suir and Clonmel in September and October 2024! We ran laps with Mr. Looram every day big lunch for several weeks in preparation and were fit as fiddles for the races! We all had a great time!
Active Breaks Challenge November- December 2024

For 4 weeks , each classroom tried a new active break activity every day! The pupils loved the opportunity to get up and move and felt far more focused and refreshed as a result!

 Valentines Day Dancing 2025

As part of our Valentines Day  2025 show, the children prepared a dancing routine to perform for their families and friends. Special thanks to Gillian for helping prepare a fantastic performance!
Easter Scavenger hunt and dance off!
The children managed to find all the hidden easter eggs as part of our 2025 Easter Scavenger hunt. To celebrate, we held an Easter Bonnet parade and dance off, with Ms Murphy leading the way!
Skip around Europe Challenge!

From 31st March to 9th May 2025, we participated in the Skip around Europe challenge! Over 4 weeks, the entire school skipped every day for 5-10 minutes after lunch! With 1 skip = 1 kilometer, we averaged an amazing 2000km each day! We picked a new European destination each week and worked out that we successfully circumnavigated the globe! Thank you to Active Flag for sending us the skipping ropes used for this challenge!
Cross Country Thurles AC 24th September 2025

Great day out for all with our daily 10 minute run paying huge dividends!
Comeragh College Cross country 29th September 2025

Cross country season in full swing with another outing for Killurney NS!
Skip around the World Challenge
Our school completed the Skip around the World Challenge! We managed to skip 65000 skips (rounded up) over a three week period, which brings us just shy of Niagra falls, not bad for a small country school! As part of the challenges we skipped past some of the word's most famous landmarks including Victoria falls and the Great Wall of China! Many thanks to Active schools for providing the skpping ropes used for the challenge! Our active schools committee was central to the process and organised additional bonus challenges including frog skipping and skipping an entire lap around the Active school walkway!

Active School Weeks

active school week June 2025

For our 2025 Active School Week, we organised a variety of fun and engaging activities to get all pupils moving! During the course of the week, the children rotated between different stations, including tug of war, foot golf and charades. One of the most exciting moments was the Teachers vs. Students penalty shootout, which brought great energy and laughter across the school.  We also gave children the opportunity to choose their favourites activities, which included skipping and hot seat basketball! We went for our annual forest walk where we built forts and when we came back we had a huge water fight! The week concluded with our much-anticipated Sports Day, a fantastic celebration of activity, teamwork, and school spirit.
Active Schools Fortnight  2026

We also registered for the Crazy Golf takeover - thank you to Active Schools Ireland for sending on equipment! Finally, our flagship event was our sponsored walk up the woods!
