A Magical Day at the Panto
We kicked off the year with a fabulous trip to see Cinderella at the pantomime in Limerick University. It really was a magical day out. There were plenty of laughs, cheers, boos for the baddies and lots of audience participation. The costumes were dazzling, the jokes were hilarious and the children had an absolute ball from start to finish. It was a wonderful way to begin 2026 together.
Grandparents’ Day Celebration
We held a beautiful Grandparents’ Day celebration up in Killurney Hall and what a special occasion it was. There was a wonderful turnout and it was heart-warming to see so many grandparents join us.
The children worked very hard in advance, creating handmade cards and lovely artwork to present as gifts. We were also treated to some very tasty refreshments, kindly provided by parents, with fantastic support from our wonderful Parents’ Association. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day so memorable.
Making St. Brigid’s Crosses
As we look forward to the beginning of spring, the children worked together to make traditional St. Brigid’s crosses. It was a fiddly couple of hours and there were a few tricky moments, but with teamwork and perseverance, everyone got the hang of it.
While weaving the crosses, we also learned about the story of Saint Brigid and her importance in Irish history and tradition. The classroom was full of concentration, cooperation and a great sense of achievement when the crosses were completed.
A Very Special Visitor – The Liam McCarthy Cup
On Friday the 30th, we were honoured to welcome Tom Fitzgerald, who works with the Tipperary Senior Hurling Team. He brought along the Liam McCarthy Cup and there was great excitement throughout the school.
The children had prepared some fantastic questions and thoroughly enjoyed hearing about life involved with the Tipperary team. We were lucky enough to take some wonderful photos and Tom very kindly brought Tipperary posters for the children to bring home as a special keepsake.
Pancake Tuesday
On Tuesday 17th February, we celebrated Pancake (Shrove ) Tuesday in school. The junior room read the story of the Runaway Pancake and designed their own perfect pancake. We set up a pancake buffet station in the resource room which was managed by some of our senior room pupils and everyone got to enjoy a pancake with their choice of toppings.
Senior Room Work – Turtle Moon
In the Senior Room, we have been reading our newest novel, Turtle Moon, which has formed the basis of our thematic work in SESE.
We explored the climate and ecosystem of Costa Rica, where the book is based, and compared it to our weather here in Ireland — a big difference in January, that’s for sure. The children examined life in the rainforest and learned what makes it such a unique biome, from its layers and biodiversity to the wide variety of plants and animals that live there.
To finish our project, the children researched the life cycle of a turtle and the many different types of turtles found in Costa Rica. They also learned about sloths, which are native to the region. It has been a fantastic cross-curricular learning experience, combining literacy, geography, science and project work, and the children have really enjoyed diving deeper into the themes of the novel.
Junior Room
We have had a busy half term back in the junior room. Children explored the themes of “Birthday parties” and “Spring on the Farm” in Aistear. We also created some lovely pieces of art work for Valentine`s Day using oil pastels as well as painting “Funky Frogs” based on the story “The Perfect Ribbit” in which we explored the theme of the frog life cycle. For history, children created a “Museum of Me” in the classroom and brought in personal artefacts which we displayed and discussed in class.
These past few weeks have been filled with fun, learning, creativity and community spirit. A big thank you to our staff, parents, grandparents and visitors who help make Killurney NS such a special place.
Here’s to a bright and busy spring ahead!
